Lebanon car bomb sparks sectarian tension
Denver News.Net Monday 29th September, 2008
Another car bomb exploded in northern Lebanon Monday, killing at least four soldiers and a civilian and wounding 25 others.
The victims were aboard a passing bus as the bomb went off, spreading deadly ball bearings through the bus windows.
The explosion in Tripoli, Lebanon's second-largest city, was the second of its type in less than two months.
The deadly bomb has stoked sectarian tensions in the Tripoli region, which is a known haven for Sunni Muslim militants.
It is not clear who was behind the attacks.
Tripoli was the scene last year of months of fighting between alleged al-Qaeda-linked militants and the Lebanese army, which left hundreds dead.
There was also violence between rival Muslim sects linked to the country’s broader political problems, though tensions were thought to have calmed after a peace agreement between Alawite and Sunni leaders earlier this month.
