Some Cadbury products recalled after Chinese taint

Denver News.Net
Monday 29th September, 2008

Chocolate maker Cadbury has announced a recall in two countries of chocolate made in its Beijing factory.

After the chocolate was found to contain melamine, UK and Australian authorities have acted to recall 11 items.

Cadbury's chocolates sold in the United States were not affected.

The Chinese Cadbury factory supplies Australia, Taiwan, Nauru, Hong Kong and Christmas Island.

Meanwhile, both Kraft Foods and Mars, companies which make cookies and chocolate bars, have questioned the findings of Indonesian chemists who identified melamine in samples of their products made in China.

Both Kraft and Mars have recalled some products in Indonesia but plan to conduct their own tests.

Melamine-laced dairy products in China have been blamed for sickening nearly 54,000 children and leading to four infant deaths.

Melamine is an industrial chemical that was placed into baby formula and other products.

The industrial chemical, which is high in nitrogen, was added to the products to increase the protein levels.

On Monday, Chinese police seized more than 485 pounds of the chemical from different food companies.

Chinese officials had previously arrested at least 18 people and detained more than two dozen suspects in the tainted dairy food scandal.
